WILMINGTON -- State Transportation Secretary Tony Tata made a visit to Wilmington on Friday.

He spoke to students at Issac Bear Early College High School during their Launching Leaders program.

Tata served as superintendent of Wake County Schools before taking his current position.

He spoke about the importance of leadership and problem-solving as the students move into the future.

"One of the things I talked about was the importance of mentors in your life and having those connections that help get you to the next level so you can learn and perform at that next level. And it seemed to me we had a great conversation," he said.

Issac Bear students finish their high school credits within two years.

They take classes through UNCW during their junior and senior years.

"You might have a lot of homework and might not have sports, but when you really think about it, when you get to the university, you're on a completely different level," said student Gabrielle Despaigne.

Two hundred thirty-six students currently attend the high school.
