WILMINGTON -- Highway Patrol troopers charged a Brunswick County deputy in connection to a crash that killed a motorcyclist.

It happened Monday at the intersection of Old Ocean Highway and Shingletree Road, near Calabash.

Investigators said Deputy Adam Lockner, 59, was responding to a domestic call when he when hit a motorcycle driven by Thomas Varney of Virginia. Varney was airlifted to the hospital, where he later died.

Deputy Lockner is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield.
