WILMINGTON—Some 4th and 5th-graders at Snipes Academy in Wilmington have a little extra motivation to excel.

During the inaugural 'Shining Stars' reception Thursday, they watched performances from UNCW senior class president and jazz pianist Sammy Pisano and graduate student Asia Brown.

The university chancellor's wife, Georgia Miller, sponsored the event.

Brown said she wants to inspire students to achieve academic excellence.

"It's good to be able to come in and encourage the kids to stay strong in their arts. Don't let that go. You can be good at something else but do it as a treat to you as well,” said Brown.

Organizers say they want this to become an annual tradition.
