WILMINGTON -- Passengers at the Wilmington International Airport will notice a few changes as they head through security.

Wilmington is the fourth airport in the state to use the Automatic Imaging Technology. TSA installed the new software last Wednesday.

The software scans each person for concealed items both metallic and non-metallic. The scan depicts a highlighted area on a generic outline of the passenger where an object is detected.

"It involves the use of harmless, electromagnetic waves that are bounced off the body," said Jon Allen, a spokesman for TSA. "The amount of energy involved is .0001 that which is permitted for a cell phone transmission. There is no X-ray involved what-so-ever with this particular type of screening technology."

Officials said 700 machines are currently in use in 180 airports across the country. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
